Fellowships

Fellowships and Funding

A female graduate student in grad writing productivity group, sponsored by the Writers Workshop.

While many of our graduate students hold internal fellowships through the department and campus-wide programs like the Humanities Research Institute (HRI) and The Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, current students are strongly encouraged to apply for external fellowships and awards as these funding sources provide financial support and can demonstrate important accomplishments in your field. In previous years, Illinois graduate students have been successful in securing these awards and graduate students at the dissertation stage are especially encouraged to apply as several fellowships and grant opportunities exist to support dissertation research and writing.

The Graduate College regularly maintains a searchable database of external fellowships and awards and offers services and resources to assist graduate students at every stage of the application process from finding suitable fellowships to writing strong proposals and applications. Graduate students interested in applying for such awards should contact The Graduate College Fellowship Office.
