Graduate alumnus Keguro Macharia (PhD, 2008) has won the Alan Bray Memorial Prize given by the GL/Q Caucus of the MLA for Frottage: Frictions of Intimacy across the Black Diaspora (NYU Press, 2019). Frottage presents new understandings of the Black diaspora and queer studies by bringing together histories and theories of blackness and sexuality, while interrogating the utility of identity categories such as gay and queer as well as those categories like human and non-human, and normative and non-normative. Macharia is an independent scholar from Kenya.
